I am putting a big emphasis on Irish this year and want to create as many opportunities for the children to use their Irish throughout the day and make resources that will encourage them to speak Irish and feel confident about it. Little fun games and ideas we use throughout the day are some of the following:
1) Every morning through Irish I ask the children what the weather is and I have a secret weather they have to guess. I go around the class asking and whoever guesses it right gets a sticker and class dojo. They are hopping out of their seats for this game.
2) Again through Irish what am I wearing game? One child stands on the table and they have a secret piece of clothing in their mind and the children have to guess it, again whoever guesses it right gets a sticker.
3) When we are lining up for lunch or home I call out different instructions in Irish for example hands on your jumper, finger on your lips, jump, read a book etc it’s a nice way to tie in what you are learning and revise. Also great for keeping them focused in line.
4) When we play PE I always play a colour game as a warm up. Shout out a colour in Irish and they have to run and find it and sometimes I do this in the class. You can also include instructions in Irish for PE.
5) During lunch I ask the children what they are eating and get them to ask each other in Irish. I always give an Irish student of the day for trying their best .
6) Reading the lovely Irish books @futafata. Go through the pictures and ask questions about what they are doing in each picture, what are they wearing, what is the weather like etc.
7) I am going to be using new resources which I know will help their confidence in using Irish. These are the new bears and clothes resources I have and the visuals will really encourage the children to speak Irish. I have éadaí and aimsir on my tpt store and I will have all themes finished by August. The bears and clothes will be used for all themes.
Little ways I try to keep up my Irish are the following:
1) Write in a diary each day and you also learn new words.
2) I ring a colleague and we talk Irish most days.
3) Listening to Irish radio and tv programmes such as TG4.
