Mé Féin

Mé Féin is a fantastic bundle to use at the start of the year. It is a lovely bundle to introduce colours, body parts and some phrases. There are lots of fun activities included which you will find below.

At the start of the PowerPoint, I go through the colours. I think it is important to revise these initially as they will need colours for lots of the themes. I have two worksheets for this. I have one with all the colours, and I use this to call out the colours, and they have to put their finger on the correct one. Then I use the black and white version and call out different colours in the various circles. It is a simple worksheet you can use to see who knows their colours.

After going through the colours, I go through a few phrases that we will be using throughout the year, and then we move onto Mé Féin phrases.

On the PowerPoint, we go through the body parts and introduce a few, and then I get them to take out their bears, and I get them to point to the different body parts I call out, and then they do it in partner work. The next day we go through the next set of body parts, and again I get them to take out their bears and go through the body parts.

Another fun game you can play with the children after they know their body parts is Cos Dearg. This is a great game to revise colours and body parts. You can call out Cos Dearg, which means put a red crayon on their foot. You can continue getting them to put different colours crayons on the body parts. They love this activity, and it is a great way to see who knows their body parts and colours.

Now in the PowerPoint, you can move onto describing hair colour and eye colour. You can play a fun game of Cé mise? as a whole class on the PowerPoint. You can give out the sheets and describe one bear and they have to circle the correct one. Then you can give out the sheets for them to do it in partner work. You can also get them to play a game in partners where one person picks one of the bears and the other has to guess who it is by asking questions in Irish about their eye and hair colour, if it is a boy or girl etc.

I also do a lot of partner work with the partner small cards and the bears to revise the phrases.

You can use a playdough sheet for getting them to put on certain parts of the body that you call out. You could also get them to draw them as another activity.

There is a game of Roll agus Abair with text and without. The text can be helpful for children who may need a little hint of what the word begins with. You can challenge older classes by getting them to write down the word under it in the non-text version.

You can play a game of memory or splat using the small body parts and colours cards below:

I have a PowerPoint called Cluichí Teanga for games of Interactive Popcorn, splat and other fun games you can use with this theme.

Then there is a summary sheet you can use to go through the phrases and the body parts.
